Meet the Crew of ASY121

Behind every great WorldFlight journey is an even greater crew. Each year, our team comes together not just to fly, but to create memories, raise funds for important causes, and enjoy a few laughs along the way. Meet the legends who keep ASY121 airborne and the bar fridge empty.

Sam Austin “Skip” – Founder & Check/Training Captain

The boss (at least he says so). With over 20 years in the aviation industry working in both avionics and flight simulation, Sam is the driving force behind our team. He built the sim, formed the crew, and somehow appointed himself Check and Training Captain. But we let it slide—he’s the reason we’re all here.

Lynton Barrett – Sim Co-Owner & Project Machine

Lynton’s the kind of bloke who can’t sit still—there’s always another upgrade, tweak, or improvement in the works. A sim co-owner and full-time aviation firefighter, Lynton’s real pride and joy? The bar attached to the simulator. Safe to say he knows where his priorities lie.

Jamie Bousfield – Sim Co-Owner & Software Sorcerer

The man behind the screens. Jamie is the sim’s software guru, always diving into configs, scripts, and system settings to make the simulator smoother and more stable. By day he’s a software engineer—by night, he’s also the team’s unofficial tree identification expert. Long story.

Neil Austin “Nulla” – Resident Beer Connoisseur

Sam’s dad and an Aussie aviation icon. After a 40+ year career flying Grumman S-2 Trackers off HMAS Melbourne, Nulla now runs his own Defence Consultancy. He’s been with ASY121 since day one and ensures the crew stays well-stocked with high-octane beer and Navy banter.

Ross Barrett “Rossco” – Head of Catering & Team Legend

Rossco started out flying with the team but soon retired from the cockpit to take on a much more critical role—head of catering. He embodies everything ASY121 is about: mateship, generosity, and making sure no one goes hungry.

Over the years, Rossco has prepared countless meals that kept the crew going through long nights and chaotic legs. While he claims to be retired, we still roll him out each day for a beer with the other old boys.

Truthfully, Rossco is one of the most valuable and beloved people to ever be part of this team. WorldFlight wouldn’t be the same without him.

Luke Bowden “Bowdo” – Midnight Flyer & Keg Finisher

Bowdo is our go-to guy for late-night flying and late-week keg finishing. With a laid-back attitude and great vibes, Luke’s presence truly captures the spirit of the team. A great mate who always brings his best—especially when the fridge starts looking empty.

Jarrod Huisman “JZ” – Mr Seahawk & MCDU Whisperer

Arguably Australia’s Mr Seahawk, JZ has been part of ASY121 since year two and is our dependable “I’ll fly whenever” guy. Always ready to jump into the seat or lend a hand, JZ is the calm voice of reason when someone inevitably enters the wrong data into the MCDU.

With a wealth of flying experience and an easygoing attitude, he’s consistently in the running for our unofficial Pilot of the Year award. JZ brings professionalism, reliability, and just the right amount of sass to keep things running smoothly.

Danny Stuhr – The Resident American

Danny works for a major simulator company and has somehow managed to remain in Australia for nearly a decade—despite Sam’s repeated attempts to get him deported. He's our cross-cultural rep and always ready with technical insight or a laugh.

Adam Jameson “Jamo” – Chopper Jockey

Ex-Navy helicopter pilot and all-round cool customer. Jamo’s flown everything from AS350s and MRH90s to EC135s. He’s known for his relaxed flying style—probably because it’s the only time he can enjoy a beer in the cockpit.

Renga – The Real-Life Top Gun

His name’s a mouthful, so we just call him Renga. A former fighter pilot in both the Singaporean Air Force and the RAAF, he’s flown A-4s, Mirages, and F/A-18s. If you hear a jaw-dropping aviation story, odds are it came from Renga. Our very own Tom Cruise.

Graham Dyer – AV Guru & Team Quiet Achiever

Graham comes from the Audio-Visual world and brings that magic to the sim. Whether it’s lighting, tech, or logistics, he’s always helping behind the scenes. A thoughtful, reliable member of the team—one of the many nice guys keeping us on track.

Mark Packer “Packer” – Bar Fixture

Another ex-Navy aviator, Packer spent over a decade flying Seahawks as an Aviation Warfare Officer and Instructor. These days, he’s part of the furniture—though sometimes it’s hard to get him off his barstool and into the sim.

Phil Ducat – Head Chef

Phil’s been with us a few years now and recently took on the crucial role of keeping everyone fed during the week. Always checking in with a “how can I help?”, Phil’s support makes a massive difference. A top bloke and welcome presence.

Adam Clerget “Clerg” – Checklist King

A career Navy helicopter maintainer, Clerg now flies as part of RAAF Virtual on VATSIM—usually in a KC-30. He’s known for printing the longest checklists known to man (mostly to confuse the older guys), and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Flight Doc – YouTube Royalty & Livestream Whisperer

New to the team in 2025, but already making waves. Known to the world as "The Flight Doc" with over 60,000 subscribers, he's joined ASY121 to bring his livestream expertise and some fresh content ideas. He fits right in… and yes, we know his real name (but we’re not telling).

Trent McInnes – Country Pilot Turned Tiger Driver

From mustering cattle in the outback to flying the ARH Tiger gunship, Trent’s story is one for the books. Somehow managing to be both a country farmer and a military pilot, Trent’s a humble, genuine bloke who’s just as passionate about aviation as he is about the latest drain-cleaning video on YouTube.

Howard Jackson “Jacko” – Home Brew Hero

Yes, another Navy helicopter pilot—but this one comes with a British accent and a gift for brewing. Jacko’s addition to the team was cemented the moment he unveiled "Howard’s Hazy Pale Ale." As long as he keeps bringing the beer, he’s got a seat in the sim.

Ben Comben “Benny / BC” – Chill Master

Benny is yet another ex military helicopter pilot—this time from the Blackhawk community. Always good for a yarn and a cold one, Benny brings a relaxed energy that keeps the sim environment grounded. Some say he and Jamo might actually be long-lost brothers.

Ethan Paino “Paino” – Fake Car Racer & Real Refueller

New to ASY121, Paino met Sam racing pretend cars online. Turns out he also holds a CPL and instrument rating and works as an aviation refueller—which is probably what we’ll get him doing here. A top guy with sharp skills and a love for aviation… even if he and Sam don’t get much done in the real world.

Phil Rando – Token Kiwi / C-130 Veteran

Phil has known Sam for years, which speaks to his questionable judgement in friends. A veteran of both the RNZAF and RAAF, Phil’s flown C-130s all over the globe. Ask him about Antarctic weather patterns—just wait until you’re past the point of no return.

Bob Ulmer – The Real Check & Training Captain

New to the team this year after dropping by in 2024, Bob brings with him a staggering amount of real-world flying experience. He’s flown just about everything—and yes, he was even rated on the Airbus. So while Sam still thinks he’s the Check and Training Captain, the rest of the crew may soon realise Bob actually knows what he’s doing. He’s already working on proper training material to undo years of Sam’s “creative” instruction. We can’t wait to hear his flying stories—and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.

Lucas Harlor “Captain Harlor” – Bar Commentator & Landing Legend

Best known for executing the greatest landing ever seen in the sim—while absolutely inebriated—Captain Harlor has cemented his place in ASY121 folklore. These days, he's more often found delivering expert commentary from the bar than actually flying, dishing out his infamous “Hot Tips” with a cold drink in hand.

A long-time member and generous donor to Team Airbus, Lucas brings good humour, strong support, and the kind of banter that keeps morale high. Whether in the sim or in the bar, Captain Harlor is always on final approach to a good time.

Timmy Binns – Apprentice Extraordinaire & Secret Weapon

Our youngest crew member and easily the one keeping Lynton on his toes, Timmy has become known for his sharp knowledge and regular “How’d he know that?” moments. For two years running, he’s been our apprentice crew member—but don’t let the title fool you, he’s already a critical part of the team.

At some point, he might realise the rest of us are just faking it until we make it. Until then, we’ll keep riding on his smarts and pretending we knew what we were doing all along.

Georgia Barrett – Next Gen Pilot & Lynton’s Reality Check

Georgia has grown up watching this strange WorldFlight tradition unfold at her house every year, probably wondering what on earth this bunch of grown-ups were doing. But last year, she finally decided to jump in the sim and flew her first leg with “Dad.”

This year, she’s continuing her WorldFlight journey—slowly proving that flying isn’t quite as hard as Lynton makes it look (which is really just a reflection of his age, let’s be honest). A fantastic addition to the crew and the next generation of ASY121.

Wall of Honor -

Slim Cartwright – Founding Member & Forever With Us

Slim was one of the original members of our WorldFlight crew and a cornerstone of what made ASY121 so special. He sadly passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer, but his impact on this team is lasting and profound.

Each year, we honour Slim’s memory with the Slim Cartwright Memorial Trophy, awarded to the crew member who goes above and beyond—someone who truly embodies Slim’s spirit, dedication, and love for the event.

Stories about Slim still flow as easily as the drinks, and at least once every year, the sim takes a run through the Grand Canyon in his honor.

Slim, you are missed. You will always be with us.
